How to Read a Long Chapter Book in Two or Three Hours

Do you have a book report due in a week? Do you want to get through that long novel so you can get that book report done as soon as possible? Read this guide to get you through that long lasting book!

Find a quiet place to read. The living room, or your own bedroom would be a good place.

Close the door. Turn off any cell phone or pager you have, and turn the TV off. These electronics will only distract you and make reading slower.

Now look at the Table of Contents.

  • Record how many chapters you have to read.
  • Separate reading times into different groups.
  • Take breaks in between. For example, if the book has 40 chapters, you can read 8 chapters at a time and take 4 or 5 minute breaks in between. This way, you'll have 5 breaks, because 40 divided by 8 equals 5.
  • Be sure to write this information down to remind yourself when to take breaks and how long to read before you take your breaks.
  • Now, just estimate how much time each time period will be reading each group of chapters plus the breaks in between. Add up all the time periods to get a final answer of the total amount of time it will take you to read the whole book. You may use a calculator if you wish.

Start reading the book
As you go along, you will get more into the book. Make sure not to get stuck on long words you don't understand. If you want to find out what they mean, jot down each word to make a list of the words you don't understand. Look them up in a dictionary later. Dictionary.com is also a good place to find definitions of words. Just type in the word in the search engine and look at the different meanings below. Be sure to finish the whole book, following the data you have recorded.

Congratulations!
You've finally finished the whole book! Treat yourself to a reward, you have done a great job! Write your book report later. It's best to give your mind a rest before writing a report. Just be sure not to put your book report off until the last minute. Write it the next day if possible.

Tips
  • If you know how to speed read, do so! This will help you get through the book you're reading much faster!
  • If you're fast at typing, type out the schedule of reading your book on the computer and print it out. Otherwise, write it. If you type slow, you will just waste time typing when you should be reading.
  • Make sure the environment you are in is peaceful and quiet. If your brother is watching TV downstairs, ask him nicely to turn it down. Here's a solution! If you have headphones, plug them into the TV. There should be a jack where you can plug it in at the front of the television. Then the person who's watching TV can hear the noise through the headphones and watch TV without bothering you!

Warning
Don't spend too much time on the routine for reading your book. Remember, the whole point is to get your book read fast! You don't want to waste time doing something unnecessary when you should be reading! Just be sure the routine is accurate enough to follow.
