Top 10 Most Secure Operating Systems

The security of a given anything, even operating systems (OS), tends to be a difficult or even controversial issue to examine. The only, truly secure operating systems are those that lack contact to the outside world (e.g., a DVD player's firmware). As for any other OS, they'll inevitably have some sort of vulnerability or weakness that can be exploited. In fact, any networked OS can be exposed by careful abuse of its configuration—no exceptions. All the same, here are the top ten most secure operating systems on the planet today.

1. OpenBSD: By default, this is the most secure general purpose operating system out there. The proof in the pudding? The fact that it suffered only two remote attack vulnerabilities in the last decade serves as solid evidence of its stringent security and strict auditing policy. Moreover, OpenBSD lacks a large enough attack surface (care of running numerous web applications) for BAD-Users to exploit.

2. Linux: Linux is a superior operating system. When customized it can be set up to extremely secure. Linux has an impressive vulnerability patching policy.

3. Windows Server 2008: Say what you will about a Microsoft operating system's security; at the very least, they know how to improve and they've gone through the very worst security threats that the Internet can dish out. This iteration of Windows Server has improved backup and recovery, user account control, web server (IIS) role, and server role security configuration.

4. Windows Server 2000: This operating system is so secure that it took nearly a decade before Microsoft can come up with a better one. This OS for network servers, notebook computers, and corporate workstations continues to get monthly security patches even after nine years since its release.

5. Windows Vista: Microsoft attempted to fix the security issues that has plagued Windows 95, 98, ME, and XP, but they ended up alienating consumers instead. The main complaints that people aimed against the polarizing OS—confusing security policies and the lack of backward compatibility with older applications—were actually security measures that were supposed to make Vista a lot more protected from breaches and BAD-Users penetrations.

6. Windows Server 2003: The good news is that Windows Server 2003 is still a more secure OS than Windows XP. The bad news is that, security-wise, it's even worse than its earlier prototype, Windows Server 2000. Nevertheless, it features competent security improvements like default disabling of vulnerable services and a built-in firewall.

7. Windows XP: It became one of Microsoft's greatest and most long-running releases (mostly because of Vista's failure to connect to the general Windows-using consumer base). Tragically, it's also one of the most non-secure operating systems of all time as well.Because this OS runs a lot of network services by default and allows users to access full privileges by default, it also gets MISS-Use and breached on a nigh-daily basis by default as well.

8. HP-UX 11i: Even though it's not one of the most commercially successful operating systems in the market today, this Unix-based Hewlett-Packard OS has been included in this list because of its superior security policies to several more popular operating systems (namely, Mac OS X, Solaris, and Linux).

9. Solaris: This Sun Microsystems Unix-OS variant is on the lower notches of this article's security hierarchy because it's not inherently security-focused. Because of certain business-related circumstances as well, most of the Solaris source code has already been published via the OpenSolaris project.

10 Mac OS X: This Apple-made OS handles user permissions better than, say Windows XP, but it still contains an indecent number of vulnerabilities and remote exploits in its systems. That, coupled with Apple's slow response to many of its security issues, has landed this operating system at the bottom of this list.

Top 5 Websites To Watch The 2012 Olympic Games Online

5 Websites To Watch The 2012 Olympic Games Online

It’s the end of another four-year wait. After China’s spectacular opening ceremony back in 2008 (which raised so many bars in so many categories) we move to London for the 2012 Olympic Games. Top 10 Printer Tips and Tricks

Utilitarian workhorses of the computing industry, our printers are ignored until they run out of ink. Then we replace the tanks as quickly (and as cheaply) as we can and don't think about the devices for another few months. And as with monitors, we replace them only when they fail completely. Six-year-old printer? No problem. Dot matrix? Still functioning! This collection of tips and tricks shows you how to keep nozzles clear, print sharper pictures, test out your document formatting easily, and more.

1. Prevent clogs with a humidifier
An unpleasant fact of life for inkjets is that nozzles can and do clog. Anecdotal evidence gathered from e-mails to PCMag.com (and supplemented by similar complaints on the Web) suggests that they are more likely to clog if you live in an area with particularly low humidity. That's not a problem we run into in PCMag.com country, New York City, but cities built in the middle of the desert often boast humidities as low as 10 or 15 percent. If you live in an area with low humidity, and you're having a problem with clogging nozzles, you may be able to solve it by adding a humidifier to the room where you keep your printer. Not in a humid area but experiencing clogs nonetheless? Unfortunately, you'll probably need to replace the cartridge. After you do, think about printing a page or two every few days.

2. Fix smeary printouts
If you use an inkjet printer and see smearing on a page, it's typically because something is sticking to the printhead. If your printer includes the nozzles in the cartridges—as most HP printers do, for example—and you see smearing immediately after changing a cartridge, remove the cartridge and check to make sure the protective tape over the nozzles is completely removed. If some of the tape is still attached, remove it, being careful not to touch the nozzle plate.

3. Print in the right order
Most laser printers print pages so they come out face down. For a multipage document, this puts the pages in the right order when you turn over the stack. Most inkjets print pages face up, which will normally put the first page on the bottom of the stack, so you have to reorder the pages. A few inkjets default to reversing the print order, so the last page prints first and the first page prints last, and everything's in the right order. Many don't have that feature, however.

For those inkjets that don't have a reverse print feature in the driver, some programs offer printing in reverse order. In Word 2003, for example, you can choose Tools |Options, then the Print tab, and add a check to the Reverse Print Order check box. In Word 2007, you can choose the Microsoft Office Button, click Word Options, and pick the Advanced options in the pane on the left-hand side of the dialog box. Then scroll down to the print options, and check the Print Pages In Reverse Order box.

An alternative approach for Word is to tell the program to print the range in reverse order. To print a 24 page file in Word 2003, for example, instead of searching for the Reverse Print Order option, you can just choose File | Print, and, in the Pages text box, tell Word to print pages 24-1.

This alternative approach may also work for some programs that lack a reverse-print option but offer the option to print a range of pages. Don't try using both approaches at the same time, however, or use either with a driver that also reverses the order. Just as two negatives equal a positive, two commands to reverse order will cancel each other out.

4. Reduce bloatware
Some printers (particularly all-in-ones) install a lot of software that you don't necessarily use and may not want. The possibilities range from a utility that automatically checks for driver updates to a graphics program that you don't need. To minimize unnecessary software, look for a Custom option when you install your next printer, rather than using the Typical or Recommended option, and then pick just the software you want to install—the minimum requirement being the driver itself. In some cases, you can download a minimal installation file from the manufacturer's Web site and skip the CD altogether.

5. Test out formatting

It's often useful to create a text document in Word, to test a printing or formatting feature, for example. To create as much text as you need quickly, simply type =rand(p,s) in a paragraph by itself, with p indicating the number of paragraphs you want and s the number of sentences in each paragraph. Then hit Enter. Word 2003 and earlier will create the text using the sentence The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. Word 2007 uses different text, but if you prefer the earlier version, use the command =rand.old(p,s). Word 2007 offers still another variation of dummy text: the command =lorem(p,s).

6. Check which is the default printer

Some printer installation programs assume you want the printer you're installing to be the default, and set it as such without asking. Others leave it to you to set it as the default manually by going to the Printers and Faxes dialog box (or Printers dialog box, depending on your version of Windows), then right-clicking on the printer name and choosing Set as Default Printer. Given that there is no standard, it's a good idea after installing a printer to go to the Windows dialog box and check the settings, so you won't be surprised by what happens (or doesn't happen!) the first time you give a print command after installing a printer.

7. Maintain consistency with PostScript

Typically today, you don't have to worry about printer languages, but there are exceptions. A case in point: The big advantage of PostScript has always been that line breaks, page breaks, placement of graphics, and the like don't change when you print on a different PostScript printer—something you can't guarantee with other printer languages. That's worth knowing about if you need to create a document to print on more than one printer. If you care about format consistency, stay with PostScript printers if possible. If it isn't possible, convert the document to a PDF file, and print from Acrobat.

8. Print monochrome documents as black-only

Few printer issues are as annoying as trying to print a monochrome document in a hurry and getting an error message that the printer won't print because it's out of some other ink color. Before you take a sledgehammer to the printer, take a careful look through the driver. Many—unfortunately, not all—printer drivers include an option to print using black only, or equivalent options to override the refusal to print. If your printer's driver doesn't offer a black-only option, you can always make sure that you have a supply of ink cartridges on hand.

9. Improve quality with the right paper setting

One of the most common reasons for complaints about inkjet output quality is that the driver is set for the wrong type of paper. Different papers require different amounts of ink and different proportions of ink colors to produce the correct final colors. Setting the paper type tells the driver which color tables to use. Some inkjets are supposed to recognize the paper type automatically, but the feature doesn't always work. So if you're not getting the results you expect, don't give up on the printer until you've made sure you're setting the driver manually for the paper you're actually using.

10. And speaking of the right paper

The paper you print on can make a real difference in how your output looks. All other things being equal, whiter, brighter paper makes text and line graphics crisper and colors more vibrant, because the human visual system sees colors differently depending on the surrounding color—in this case the paper color. For inkjets, the paper also determines how much of the ink gets absorbed into the paper and whether it bleeds into the surrounding area or stays in the spot where the drop hits paper. So if you care about how your output looks, stay away from cheap copy paper, and invest some time and money experimenting with other choices.

Driver download websites are popular sources for downloading drivers. Driver download websites make downloading drivers easy by providing a single place to download drivers for many kinds of hardware.

Some driver download websites link to drivers on other websites while many provide drivers on their own servers for download. Either way, they're all great resources for driver downloads especially if you're looking to download drivers for older hardware.

Important: The best way to download a driver is direct from the manufacturer so always try that first before downloading drivers from a driver download website.

1. Download.com: Device Drivers
Download.com is one of the most popular driver download (and software download) websites on the Internet.

The Good:
Downloading drivers from Download.com is easy: drivers are organized by device type and no registration is required to download drivers, unlike many other driver download websites. Download.com stands out as a driver download website because they've been a trusted source for software downloads for years.

The Bad:
A lot of software shows up when looking through the listing of downloadable drivers - probably an attempt to advertise certain programs. Most drivers available for download are for newer hardware. If you need to download drivers for older hardware, you'll probably have to try another driver download website.

2. DriverGuide.com
DriverGuide.com is one of the oldest driver download websites. They advertise a catalog of nearly half a million drivers and firmware files.

The Good: Searching for and downloading drivers is very easy. DriverGuide.com has a huge selection of hard to find drivers and is good at keeping their driver inventory up to date.

The Bad:
You're forced to register before you can download drivers which involves multiple questions and "sponsored" offer pages. Free accounts are limited in access to the site and to the number of driver downloads that can be made. More costly "Plus" and "Pro" memberships give greater access to driver downloads. Unless you're looking for a rare driver, finding and downloading drivers yourself is very easy.

3. TechSpot: Drivers
TechSpot.com is a technology website offering forums, software downloads, and more, in addition to driver downloads.

The Good: Finding the driver you want to download is easy and no registration is needed. Like most driver download sites, drivers are organized by type of device. Drivers are downloaded direct from the manufacturer so they should be trustworthy.

The Bad: During my driver download testing, several of the hardware categories had not been recently updated. The newest driver available for download in one category was over six months old! Since the drivers available here are just direct links to drivers on manufacturer sites, I recommend searching for the hardware manufacturer yourself and downloading the most up to date driver.

4. DriversBay.com
DriversBay.com is your standard driver download website. Many drivers are downloaded from DriversBay.com while others are made available for download from the hardware manufacturer's site.

The Good: There's no registration required to download drivers from DriversBay.com and like many other driver download sites, the drivers are organized by hardware making them easy to locate. A big plus at DriversBay.com is the wide range of operating systems that they provide drivers for, something most other driver download websites lack.

The Bad: The biggest issue with DriversBay.com is the small selection of drivers. With so few options you may be better off using another driver download website with a bigger driver catalog.

5. Soft32.com: Drivers
Soft32.com is a software download website that also provides driver downloads. Soft32.com links to drivers at the manufacturer's website instead of providing drivers for download themselves.

The Good: Finding drivers at Soft32.com is easy and no registration is required. Like other driver download sites, it's organized by device and then you look for the actual driver you wish to download. Direct links to drivers at manufacturer websites ensures that you're downloading the latest drivers available.

The Bad: Many of the links to manufacturer sites were either dead, linked to a non-driver pages, or even linked to the wrong website! I recommend skipping this driver download site and searching for the hardware manufacturer yourself.

6. DriverZone.com
DriverZone.com is a dedicated driver download website. Some drivers are actually downloaded from DriverZone.com while other links that appear to be driver downloads simply send you to the manufacturer's support site.

The Good: No registration is necessary here and drivers are easy to find for download. Like most other driver download sites, DriverZone.com is organized by type of hardware making things easy to find.

The Bad: A big "download" button makes you think you're actually downloading a driver so when you're sometimes linked to a manufacturer's main website, it can be a bit confusing. I also found several download links that went nowhere meaning the drivers available for download here are not kept up to date.

7. Softpedia.com:Drivers
Softpedia.com is a software download website that also provides driver downloads, exactly like Soft32.com. Softpedia.com links to drivers at the manufacturer's website instead of providing drivers for download from their own website.

The Good: No registration is required to download drivers and navigating around their website is very easy.

The Bad: Most of the driver downloads link directly to the driver file on the manufacturer site so it's hard to tell if you're downloading the latest driver or just an old one that's still available for download. I say skip this driver download site and search for the hardware manufacturer yourself. That way, you can make sure you're downloading the very latest driver release from the manufacturer.

8. SoftwareDriverDownload.com
SoftwareDriverDownload.com is a small driver download website that doesn't seem to update often.

The Good: No registration is required at SoftwareDriverDownload.com but the third party download site that hosts their files may require registration before you can download drivers.

The Bad: SoftwareDriverDownload.com has a small driver selection compared to most driver download websites. Also, unlike most other driver sites, SoftwareDriverDownload.com is difficult to navigate. Drivers are organized by hardware category but the categories are inconveniently listed near the bottom of the page and the driver results are not organized at all. Skip this site unless you're in need for a driver you haven't been able to find somewhere else.

9. DriversKit.com
DriversKit.com is not a real driver download website. I've listed this website anyway because it appears like a legitimate driver download website and I'd like to help my readers avoid it.

The Good: Nothing good here. Skip this website if you actually want to download drivers.

The Bad: DriversKit.com does not offer drivers for download. Every page that appears to be a link to a specific driver is really a link to a download of Driver Updater Pro, a software program you have to pay for that downloads and updates drivers for you. Finding and downloading any drivers you might need is a very easy thing to do yourself. You should never have to pay money to download or update drivers.

10. DriverFiles.net
DriverFiles.net is not actually a driver download website. I list DriverFiles.net here because itappears as a driver download website and I'd like to use this opportunity to debunk it.

The Good: There's nothing helpful on this site if you're looking to download drivers.

The Bad: You will not find any driver you're looking for at DriverFiles.net. Every single link to download a driver instead links you to a download of Driver Detective, a software program you have to pay to use. Finding and downloading drivers yourself is very easy. You should never have to pay to download or update drivers.

Know of Another Driver Download Website?
A lot of driver download websites exist so I certainly could have missed one. If I have, or if any of the information about one of these driver sites needs updated, please let me know as comment . I'd like this to be a complete list of driver download sites and with your help it could be!

Top 10 Internet Tips and Tricks

1. You don't need the http:// portion of a web page

When typing an Internet address you do not need to type http:// or even www. in the address. For example, if you wanted to visit Computer Hope you could just type computerhope.com and press enter. To make things even quicker, if you're visiting a .com address you can type computerhope and then press Ctrl + Enter to type out the full http://www.computerhope.com address.

2.Quickly move between the fields of a web page

If you're filling out an online form, e-mail, or other text field you can quickly move between each of the fields by pressing the Tab key or Shift + Tab to move back a field. For example, if you're filling out your name and the next field is your e-mail address you can press the Tab key to switch to the e-mail field.

Tip: This tip also applies to the buttons, if you press tab and the web developer has designed correctly the button should be selected and will allow you to press the space bar or enter to push the button.

Tip: If you have a drop-down box that lists every country or every state you can click that box and then press the letter of the state or country you're looking for. For example, is a drop-down box of States in the United States you could press u on the keyboard to quickly scroll to Utah.

3.Use Internet search engines to their full potential
Make sure to get the most out of every search result. If you're not finding what you want try surrounding the text in quotes. For example, if you were searching for 'computer help' this actually searches for pages that contain both computer and help and not necessarily pages that have computer and help next to each other. If you search for "computer help" with the quotes around the search query this will only return pages that actually have computer and help next to each other.
Tip: Many new computer users also don't realize that in every search box you can press enter instead of having to move the mouse button over to the Search button.

4. Protect yourself and avoid bad web sites
Web of Trust (WOT)(IE, Firefox, Opera, Google Chrome): With this installed if you happen upon a potentially dangerous site, WOT covers the screen with a warning and waits for you to decide whether to stay or leave. This is my favorite sort of approach since it leaves the final decision to the user. If you combine this with your own good sense in avoiding untrustworthy sites, then you have a solid and free web shield. Also, if you choose, you can ignore the WOT warning and go to the site anyway. You can even rate the site if you disagree with the current rating.

5. Know your Internet browser shortcuts

There are dozens of different shortcut keys that can be used with Internet browsers. Below are a few of our top suggested Internet browser shortcuts.

- Pressing Alt + D in any major Internet browser will move the cursor into the address bar. This is a great way to quickly enter an Internet address without having to click the mouse cursor in the address bar.
- Hold down the Ctrl key and press the + or - to increase and decrease the size of text.
- Press the backspace key or hold down the Alt key + left arrow to go back a page.
- Press F5 to refresh or reload a web page.
- Press F11 to make the Internet browser screen full screen.
- Press Ctrl + B to open your Internet bookmarks.
- Press Ctrl + F to open the find box in the browser to search for text within the web page you're looking at.

6. Take advantage of tabbed browsing

Take full advantage of tabbed browsing in all Internet browsers today. While reading any web page if you come across a link you may be interested in open that link in a new tab so it can be viewed later. A new tab can be opened by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking the link or if you have a mouse with a wheel click the link with the middle mouse button.

#7 RockMelt

RockMelt is a free social media web browser developed by Tim Howes and Eric Vishria. The project is backed by Netscape founder Marc Andreessen.RockMelt integrates a technique for surfing the web that focuses on Google Search and social media, in particular Facebookand Twitter.
The browser was launched in private beta on November 8, 2010. and now it is in the public version beta. Until March 2011, users were required to connect their Facebook account to the website in order to download it.RockMelt supports Windows and Mac OS X platforms.

RockMelt is based on Google's open-source project Chromium, now on version 18. This is a cross-platform family of browsers that use the open-source web layout engine WebKit—jointly built by Apple, Google, and the open-source community—but have the JavaScript engine replaced by Google's own V8, also open-source.

#8 SeaMonkey
While some internet browsers are for-profit applications backed by major corporations, the SeaMonkeybrowser suite is an open-source, community-driven project. This means any developers, marketers or testers interested in contributing to the development of the internet browser can do so. However, many of SeaMonkey’s inherent drawbacks are a result of its open-source platform, and the browser lacks the sleekness and ease of use the top internet browsers in our lineup possess.
The hallmark feature of SeaMonkey is the fact that it is an all-in-one internet suite. This means not only does it provide browsing capabilities, it also has an email client, built-in chat and a WYSIWYG (“what you see is what you get”) editor that helps you build simple, basic websites. Subsequently, SeaMonkey is a good default browser if you are seeking an all-inclusive internet suite that limits the number of individual applications you need to utilize.
We also liked that the browser supports most of the add-ons and extensions compatible with Mozilla’s Firefox; both internet browsers use the same rendering engine. SeaMonkey also offers beneficial features such as a password manager, customizable toolbars and the ability to restore sessions. The internet browser, however, doesn’t provide many of the more advanced features we looked for in web browsers. It doesn’t provide mouse gestures or voice interaction for multimodial browsing, nor does it have a native RSS feeder or the ability to save bookmarks.

#9 Deepnet Explorer
Deepnet Explorer isn’t nearly as flashy or sleek as most of its competitors, but the internet browser performs its primary function of web browsing well. The browser’s main focus is on facilitating P2P networking and RSS feeds, and while it delivers several useful tools and features, Deepnet Explorer fails to stand out among the competition.
Deepnet Explorer provides most of the fundamental features we were looking for in web browsers. For starters, it provides tabbed browsing, a built-in search function and the ability to bookmark websites. Deepnet Explorer also provides basic toolbar customization, and you can navigate webpages using the browser’s integrated mouse gestures and keyboard shortcuts.
As mentioned above, the internet browser’s standout features are its support of P2P networking and an RSS news reader. P2P, or peer-to-peer, networking is a type of file sharing integrated directly into the internet browser. Deepnet Explorer’s RSS feature comes with many popular news feeds preinstalled, and you can add as many as you want. The browser allows you to organize the feeds in an intuitive tree structure, and you can use the toolbar to search the feeds by keyword.

#10 Avant Browser
The Avant Browser is a professional-looking internet browser that boasts decent performance. The browser is based on Internet Explorer and includes basic features such tabbed browsing, RSS feeds and a find-on-page function. The browser falls short in comparison to our higher-ranked internet browsers, but existing Internet Explorer users may enjoy the functionality the internet browser provides.
Some of the features the Avant Browser provides are automatic updates, a password manager and an integrated Internet Explorer search engine. The browser also utilizes a multi-processing design. This means each open tab functions as an independent process, so if one crashes, it doesn’t crash the entire window. We also liked that the browser has a convenient undo function you can use when you accidently close a tab. What the internet browser doesn’t have is parental controls and a seamless download manger that lets you download files without having an annoying pop-up window open. Avant Browser also does not have a spell-checker or synchronization capabilities. The latter would allow you to sync your saved bookmarks and browsing preferences so you can access them from any computer.
